About this position

Start Date: 1 March 2027

Duration: Fixed Term until 31 December 2031

We invite applications for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work with Dr Martin Bruns on a project Short-run Climate Change Effects: Evidence from Structural Vector Autoregression funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The project examines the economic effects of climate-related shocks such as natural disasters or weather extremes, at a monthly or quarterly frequency. To do so, a series of both methodological time series econometrics studies and applied climate-related studies will be conducted, partly in cooperation with the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit (CRU), the European Central Bank (ECB), and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).

The primary duties will be

  • to construct a database of monthly climate shocks which can be readily used in a structural vector autoregression
  • to implement novel time series econometrics methods in software packages such as R, Matlab, and Python
  • to liaise with external partners such as the CRU, ECB, and DIW Berlin
  • to engage in the wider research activities as part of the macro cluster at the department of economics at St Andrews Business School
  • to disseminate the project findings at international conferences and related events
  • to attend both internal and external training events as well as professional development opportunities

The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD in economics with expertise in time series econometrics and macro-econometrics, handling of large datasets, and will have an interest in environmental sciences. Evidence of engagement with climate-related research as well as Bayesian econometric methods is desirable.

The post is available for 60 months starting March 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter.
