What a PhD pays here (as of September 2026)

For PhD positions funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the rate from January 2026 is €2,832.10 a month gross for up to 30 hours a week.

Positions paid from other budgets follow the university's or institute's own rates, and the advert states the salary and the weekly hours.

Contract or stipend

Usually a contract. FWF sets its PhD rates as personnel costs — you are employed on the project, with the hours and salary written into the advert. Check the advert for the hours, since they decide the pay.
