About this position

and Communication Sciences is a hub of expertise with roughly 220 faculty and staff members, of which 12 are professors and 9 are tenure track professors. We confer about 100 master’s degrees and 15-20 doctoral degrees on an annual basis. Our teaching and research activities are based on a profound understanding of electrical and electromagnetic phenomena and their modelling and applications. We work in close collaboration with several industrial partners and maintain an active presence in the international scientific community. We also offer an excellent research infrastructure with state-of-the-art RF measurement laboratories with over-the-air signal generation, transmission and antenna measurement capabilities up to 110 GHz with an upcoming state-of-the-art anechoic chamber.

Job description

We are inviting applications for a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) position in Antenna Engineering. The main research topic will be antenna engineering including RF engineering, including but not limited to topics such as:

  • Mobile phone antenna design and electromagnetic simulations
  • Prototype manufacturing
  • Extensive RF and antenna measurements utilizing anechoic chamber, RF measurement equipment and human phantoms
  • RF circuit design
  • Combining signal processing with antenna design

In this position, the candidate is expected to: 

  1. carry out high-quality research on mutually agreed topics, as well as publish / present results in prestigious international scientific conferences or journals, 
  2. complete a doctoral degree, including mandatory study credits required,
  3. assist in teaching tasks and undergraduate supervision (up to 5% of total working time).

The work will be supervised by Academy Research Fellow Mikko Heino.

The position is located in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences in the Unit of Electrical Engineering. The work will be conducted on site, by default, as we encourage active participation to the local and vibrant research community. Partial remote work (e.g., 1–2 days a week) is possible, as separately negotiated. 

Requirements and further details

To qualify for this position, the candidate should have a master’s degree (or equivalent eligibility for doctoral studies) from electrical engineering, microwave engineering, or another applicable field by the start of employment. Master’s degree needs to be completed before the starting date of employment mentioned below. The candidate should possess a solid foundation in antenna design and RF engineering; and strong oral and written communication skills in English (including satisfaction of the language skill requirements of the doctoral program of the discipline). 

Prior research experience is not mandatory but may be considered an advantage. The candidate should clearly state their motivation for pursuing a doctoral degree in the cover letter.

We offer

The expected starting date is September 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible. A trial period of 6 months is applied to all new employees. The duration of employment is until 31.8.2029.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2–4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher is approximately 2800 € / month. The salary increases based on experience and the progress of doctoral studies.

Location of the work is Tampere, Finland — the largest inland city in the Nordic countries.

The research will be conducted at the Wireless Research Center at Tampere University, Finland.
