About this position

Job description

Are you passionate about cutting-edge semiconductor technology for solving real societal problems? Then this PhD position could be a fit for you. In this project you will push the limit of spectroscopic analysis by developing novel photonic chips working at ultralow light levels (down to femtowatts). These chips will form the core of sensors which are crucial for advancing healthcare and the energy transition.

Information
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows characterizing materials and tissues, and it is widely used in industry. Our group has recently developed integrated spectral sensors, based on an advanced nanophotonic platform. These low-cost spectral chips, already commercialized by our spin-off MantiSpectra, provide detailed spectral information in the spectral region 900-1700 nm and allow measuring materials properties. However, they are based on reflection and therefore require a powerful light source to illuminate the object. Their application could be widely extended if they were sensitive enough to measure light emitted by a sample through fluorescence or Raman scattering. This requires pushing the limit of spectral sensing technology to combine spectral discrimination and detection at the femtowatt/low picowatt level, in a single device. To this aim the project will explore advanced device designs and fabrication methods, and collaborate with other TU/e research groups for the integration with low-noise amplification. The sensors will be fabricated at the NanoLab@TU/e cleanroom facility, using advanced semiconductor equipment. Their application to low-light sensing applications will also be explored during the project, in collaboration with industrial partners.
