About this position

On the 1 August 2026, the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent will form a pioneering new multi-university group called London and South- East (LASE) University Group.

Should you join us, you will be employed by LASE but will work as part of the University of Greenwich academic division, contributing to its distinct strengths, community and identity while also being part of a wider group that brings together the scale, resilience and shared ambition of both universities.

Through LASE we aim to deliver outstanding education, impactful research, and meaningful regional and global impact.

The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) is an internationally renowned centre of excellence in sustainable development and international development research, education, and practice within the University of Greenwich. With more than 125 years of experience working across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and other regions, NRI undertakes interdisciplinary research and capacity-strengthening activities to address some of the world's most pressing challenges, including climate change, food and nutrition security, biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and natural resource management. NRI works closely with governments, international organisations, NGOs, research institutions, and private-sector partners to deliver impactful research and innovation that contributes to sustainable and equitable development.

We are seeking an outstanding and highly motivated Research Fellow to join the project Scaling Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience, Biodiversity Conservation, and Sustainable Livelihoods in Ethiopias Drylands: A Participatory Systems Approach, funded by the Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate (GCBC). The successful candidate will play a central role in delivering an innovative interdisciplinary research programme focused on developing, evaluating, and scaling Nature-Based Solutions in Ethiopias drylands. The role will involve mixed-methods research, stakeholder engagement, participatory systems approaches, scenario analysis, development of decision-support tools, scientific publishing, and collaboration with project partners in Ethiopia and the UK.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline together with experience in interdisciplinary sustainability research. Experience in systems thinking and modelling approaches, stakeholder engagement, and working in international development contexts is essential. Experience with System Dynamics Modelling software (e.g., Vensim, Stella or similar), dashboard development, knowledge of Ethiopia or the wider East African region, and experience of participatory modelling approaches would be highly desirable.

The role will involve close collaboration with international research and development partners and will require overseas travel, primarily to Ethiopia.
