About this position
About AITHYRA
AITHYRA is a pioneering biomedical research institute in Vienna, Austria, where artificial intelligence meets life sciences to drive the next biological revolution. AITHYRA is an institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and was established with generous funding from the not-for-profit Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation Mainz. We are building a world-class collaborative environment that brings together AI specialists, experimental scientists, and engineers to push the boundaries of biomedical innovation and improve human health.
Join us in shaping the future of biomedical AI—where science meets innovation,
and where magic happens.
The Nomburg Lab at AITHYRA is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow or Bioinformatics Scientist to join our interdisciplinary team that combines AI, structural biology, and high-throughput molecular virology to decode the virus-host conflict. The Nomburg Lab pairs computational and experimental methods, with a special emphasis on interactions between viruses and cellular immunity.
The Nomburg Lab uses protein structure prediction and comparison to study viral immune antagonists (see Nomburg et al., Nature 2024 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-07809-y). We recently released the first manuscript from the Nomburg lab (bioRxiv https://doi.org/10.64898/2026.07.21.739742) where we map the structural landscape of the viral proteome and show that conserved folds are recurrently used by pathogens for immune antagonism.
We are looking for a scientist to apply protein structure-based methods, including structural predictions, comparisons, and phylogenetics, to study the virus-host conflict. This position will be between 80% and 100% computational, with the possibility for experimental work should there be interest. At the Nomburg Lab, we are dedicated to the success of lab members. The Nomburg Lab is collegial and highly collaborative, with ongoing computational and experimental work supplemented by a state-of-the-art AI-guided robotics facility. This project will be implemented in close collaboration with other lab members and will be tailored to fit the candidate’s interests and wishes for technical development. Lab culture is very important to us, so we strive to be inclusive, friendly, and share culture and science.
