About this position

Post-Doctoral Research Associate Position: Guenther Lab, Division of Molecular Oncology, Department of Oncology

Job Description

We are excited to announce a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Lillian Guenther, an Assistant Member in the Division of Molecular Oncology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Dr. Guenther's research specifically focuses on identification and investigation into the biology of novel therapeutic targets in pediatric bone sarcomas. Dr. Guenther's research utilizes genome-scale CRISPR screening and other complementary large-scale chemical and genomic screening modalities, as well as advanced molecular biology and biochemical techniques in multiple types of pre-clinical models to uncover novel dependencies, or tumor-specific genes critical for tumor initiation or survival. Research in the Guenther laboratory is designed to discover how such critical dependencies enable cell growth, with a focus on mechanistic investigation and opportunities for eventual clinical translation. An area of advanced research and interest in the lab is investigating proteins critical for DNA damage repair in bone tumors, alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) biology, as well as novel tumor suppressor/predisposition factors in osteosarcomas.

The Guenther Lab seeks a post-doctoral research associate with a passion for cancer biology, with interests in rigorous mechanistic investigation of novel oncogenes and tumor suppressors that impact pediatric bone sarcoma tumorigenesis. We seek a candidate with interest and willingness to work with genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs), immunocompromised/xenograft mouse models, as well as in vitro systems to unravel intricate biological mechanisms in a critical and thoughtful manner. An MD and/or PhD or equivalent in a biological sciences discipline is required , and specific interests and experience in DNA damage repair, replication stress, or ALT biology, and/or experience working with GEMMs is encouraged.

The post-doctoral fellow will join a team of engaged, passionate scientists in the Guenther lab. Dr. Guenther is a physician-scientist and pediatric oncologist and has been a mentor to trainees of all levels. Dr. Guenther is committed to training post-doctoral fellows in the development of scientific thinking and skills such as grant writing, manuscript writing, and effective presentation. Dr. Guenther will encourage the postdoctoral fellow to develop their own independent scientific ideas and hypotheses in a rigorous and supportive environment. Candidates will be expected to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team of scientists. Expectations include project leadership, writing manuscripts, contributions to grant applications, and the drive to apply to fellowship grants as eligible, as well as mentorship and supervision of more junior trainees in the lab. The candidate should have exceptional writing and presentation skills and a track record of academic productivity. Dr. Guenther is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, diverse workspace that fosters equity while advancing pediatric cancer research.

The Division of Molecular Oncology and the top-notch core resources at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will allow the candidate access to the world-class expertise and technology necessary to perform high level science. The St. Jude Post-Doctoral Association provides extensive support to trainees in the institution including career advancement, scientific writing and speaking seminars, as well as community-building events. In addition, postdoctoral fellows at St. Jude receive a generous yearly Professional Development Allowance for travel to scientific meetings.
