About this position

The Halassa lab (https://halassalab.vtc.vt.edu/) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) at Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC).

About the Lab

The lab integrates state-of-the-art neural recording technologies, complex cognitive tasks, and computational models to investigate the neural basis of flexible cognition. From basic functional circuit dissection in animals to human clinical studies, we ask how network disruptions cause cognitive deficits in neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. In addition to making fundamental discoveries (e.g. how thalamocortical interactions implement attentional control and task switching), we aim to understand these processes well enough to develop targeted, precision treatments for patients.

The successful candidate will lead projects investigating these brain functions in rodent and tree shrew (Tupaia Belangeri) models, receiving direct mentorship from the Principal Investigator alongside guidance from senior research personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Experimental Design: Develop and optimize behavioral and physiological paradigms targeting brain networks.
  • Data Collection: Conduct in vivo neurophysiological recordings and behavioral assays in mice and tree shrews.
  • Data Analysis: Process large-scale neural datasets, applying computational tools to model behavioral and neural data.
  • Dissemination: Write high-quality manuscripts and present findings at national and international conferences.
  • Grantsmanship: Write fellowship applications and assist with the preparation of grant proposals.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, or a closely related quantitative field. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
  • Prior experience working with animal models (rodents or other mammalian models).
  • Evidence of scientific productivity through peer-reviewed publications or preprints.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong analytical and computational background.
  • Proficiency in spike train analysis and neural decoding methods.
  • Advanced programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or R.
  • Experience with surgical procedures and in vivo recording techniques (e.g., electrophysiology or calcium imaging).

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: Commensurate with experience, adhering to the NIH Postdoctoral standard salary scale.

Benefits: Comprehensive Virginia Tech employee benefits package including health insurance, paid parental leave, retirement options, and professional development support.

Some positions — especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland — are filled by writing directly to the supervisor rather than through an online form. These addresses were taken from the advert text, so check them against the official listing before you write.

A cold email to a supervisor is the highest-leverage thing you can send — and the easiest to get wrong. Ask us to look at yours before you hit send.
