About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow in Genetic Medicines and Cardiovascular Bioengineering
Rice University | In collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine | Houston, Texas
Help turn programmable gene regulation into new therapies for cardiovascular disease and mitochondrial engineering.
The Hilton and Ghanta laboratories seek a creative, rigorous, and collaborative postdoctoral researcher to help lead a newly funded NIH CATALYZE program developing innovative genetic therapies for heart disease. This position connects molecular engineering with preclinical therapeutic development, offering the opportunity to shape a translational research program and contribute to its scientific and commercial advancement.
The fellow will be appointed at Rice University, with Dr. Isaac Hilton serving as the primary supervisor and joint scientific mentorship from Dr. Ravi Ghanta at Baylor College of Medicine. The position includes close collaboration with Dr. Mario Escobar and interdisciplinary teams across both institutions.
The opportunity
Our collaboration combines the Hilton laboratory’s expertise in CRISPR-based gene regulation, synthetic biology, and therapeutic delivery with the Ghanta laboratory’s strengths in cardiovascular biology, cardiac surgery, and preclinical disease models.
The successful candidate will:
- Take intellectual ownership of research advancing genetic technologies toward therapeutic application.
- Design and lead molecular, cellular, and in vivo studies, integrating findings across collaborating teams.
- Develop manuscripts and presentations, mentor junior researchers, and contribute to project milestones.
- Participate in intellectual property development and commercialization planning according to project needs and personal interests.
This role is particularly suited to a scientist interested in connecting technology development with disease biology and building a career in academic research, biotechnology, or translational medicine.
Who we are looking for
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in bioengineering, molecular or cellular biology, physiology, cardiovascular science, gene therapy, or a related discipline.
We particularly welcome candidates with strengths in in vivo experimentation, cardiovascular or mitochondrial biology, or preclinical therapeutic development. Experience with CRISPR-based technologies, viral or nonviral delivery, animal surgery, or small- and large-animal models is valuable.
Candidates are not expected to bring expertise in every area. We value experimental rigor, scientific independence, clear communication, reliable follow-through, and enthusiasm for learning across disciplines. Interest in biotechnology entrepreneurship is especially welcome.
Appointment and application
This is a full-time, on-site Rice University appointment. Starting salary is $64,000 annually, with potential for a higher starting salary based on relevant postdoctoral experience and applicable NIH guidance, plus Rice benefits. Continued appointment is contingent on funding, research needs, and satisfactory performance.
Applications will be reviewed immediately and until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is Fall 2026.
Please submit a CV, a cover letter of no more than two pages describing your relevant experience and interests, and contact information for three professional references.
