Research Assistant (PhD student position) (f/m/d)
in German pay scale 13 TV-L
with 75% of the weekly working hours (29.4 hours)

Job description:
In the Microbial Ecophysiology Research Group, we investigate the structure and function of Antarctic microbial communities involved in the degradation of organic matter in iron-rich marine sediments and, consequently, in elemental cycles within marine sediments. Through laboratory enrichment and stable isotope probing experiments, we have already identified several key microorganisms; however, their genetic potential and specific functions remain unexplored.
In the project “Unravelling the genetic repertoire and diversity of keystone microorganisms in Antarctic marine sediments by metagenomic data mining” (DFG Priority Program on Antarctic research with comparative investigations in Arctic Ice Regions – SPP1158), we aim to close these knowledge gaps using a data-mining approach. To do so, we will use in house as well as previously published 16S amplicon sequencing data, metagenomes, and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) to identify patterns, trends, and gain deeper insights into the key organisms in these extreme habitats.
Your main responsibilities will include:

Identification of key microbial species in Antarctic coastal sediments using network analyses

Investigation of the genetic repertoire of these key species to elucidate their eco-physiological roles and distribution

Phylogenetic and functional comparison of Antarctic keystone groups with microbial communities from other polar regions

Annual participation in the SPP1158 workshop to present the project’s progress

Presentation of results at international conferences

Publication of results in leading, peer-reviewed scientific journals
Voraussetzungen
What you need to bring:

A successfully completed scientific university degree (Master’s/university diploma) in biology/microbiology, bioinformatics, or a related field.
Applicants who are in the final phase of their Master’s degree program will also be considered. Please note that submission of your Master’s degree certificate is mandatory for employment. - In-depth knowledge of working with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, particularly 16S amplicon data and (meta-)genomes
- Experience in the computer-assisted analysis of large biological datasets (e.g., using R, Python, and Bash/Linux environments)
- Very good written and spoken English skills
- Ability to work well in a team
- Communication skills in an international work environment
The following would also be advantageous:
- Experience with network analysis in microbial ecology

Knowledge of the reconstruction and analysis of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs)

Basic understanding of polar microbiology, marine sediments, or ecological issues

Depending on individual qualifications, a gross annual salary in accordance with the TV-L ranging from 57,112.44 € (Level 1) and 81,176.28 € (Level 6) for a full-time position (39.2 hours per week). The university will determine the individual pay grade assignment based on relevant prior professional experience upon an offer of employment. Additional benefits, such as the annual bonus (“Christmas bonus”) and any career advancement opportunities within the advertised pay grade, are also dependent on this assignment. This is based on the applicable legal provisions of the TV-L (specifically § 16 TV-L).
