About this position
Department: Geography
Vacancy ID: 044863
Closing Date: 23-Nov-2026
We are seeking a Research Assistant to contribute to two Research Ireland funded projects (HoStIr: Holocene Storminess in Ireland and PCARB: past carbon accumulation by Irish blanket bogs). The appointee will contribute to the analysis of core samples for both projects, including conducting loss-on-ignition, wet sieving, humification, macrofossil and testate amoebae analyses.
Peat cores from blanket bogs across Ireland have been collected as part of the HoStIr and PCARB projects. The HoStIr project is analysing these cores to develop new proxies for reconstructing past storminess and multi-millennial storminess reconstructions. The PCARB project cores are being analysed to reconstruct past changes in carbon accumulation rates and simultaneously developing palaeoecological records with which to better understand the past changes in carbon accumulation.
