The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

Your responsibilities include
Conduct research and development in the field of innovative analytical methods for battery materials and batteries, with a particular focus on:
- Developing quantitative gas analysis methods in combination with operando NMR investigations of batteries and battery materials.
- Conducting literature reviews and preparing scientific publications on innovative analytical approaches for batteries and battery materials.
- Acquiring experimental data, particularly through (operando) NMR spectroscopy and gas analysis techniques.
- Evaluating, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data.
- Preparing regular reports and documenting project progress.
- Presenting research findings at national and international scientific conferences.
Your qualifications
Applicants must meet the following mandatory requirements:
- An excellent university degree (Diploma or Master's degree) in Analytical and Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
- A completed PhD in Chemistry, Battery Research, or a related field.
- Experience working in interdisciplinary research projects and willingness to undertake national and international business travel.
- Proficiency in programming, automation, and scientific data management, as well as experience with software development and version control practices (e.g., Python, EPICS, ophyd, Bluesky, Git, and AI/LLM-assisted development environments).
- Hands-on experience and in-depth expertise in analytical methods for trace gas analysis (e.g., DEMS, GC-MS, and optical techniques).
- Strong technical understanding of the interaction and integration of scientific instrumentation, control systems, and data acquisition systems.
- Experience in the statistical evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data using established and advanced methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare scientific publications and present research results at national and international scientific meetings.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills.
- Strong communication and information-sharing skills, a structured and goal-oriented working style, high levels of initiative and commitment, a collaborative and team-oriented mindset, and the ability to think conceptually, strategically, and innovatively.
The following qualifications are considered advantageous:
- Initial practical experience with solid-state NMR spectroscopy and a strong interest in operando battery NMR measurements.
- Sound knowledge of electrochemical measurement techniques and experimental methodologies, including their integration into complex experimental setups and research programs.
- Very good written and spoken German language skills.
