The International Max Planck Research School for Epigenetics, Biophysics and Metabolism (IMPRS-EBM) is looking for talented and motivated students, with a strong commitment to basic research and a passion for science, aspiring to work towards a doctoral degree in the fields of:
Epigenetics, Biophysics, Metabolism, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Functional Genomics, Bioinformatics and Proteomics
IMPRS-EBM is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics and the University of Freiburg (Germany).
What we offer:
Laboratory rotations
A unique aspect of our program is the rotation period, where researchers spend time in three different labs before starting their PhD project. This provides further insight into different research topics and lab environments, allowing you to identify a suitable laboratory for your PhD thesis.
Personalised mentoring and a structured training curriculum
You will benefit from the supervision of the respective group leader and members of your Thesis Advisory Committee, who give valuable feedback and advice on your project. A broad curriculum complements the laboratory training, covering advanced scientific training, transferable career-critical skills, career development and networking.
Interdisciplinary and international research environment
The program integrates strategies from molecular biology and biochemistry with biophysical and computational methods and is designed to equip doctoral researchers with the tools to study epigenetics from both a molecular biology perspective and through the lenses of metabolism and biophysics. We currently have 54 doctoral researchers from 22 countries, and are proud of our growing alumni group of more than 130 graduates.
Access to state-of-the-art core facilities for your PhD project
In-house scientific core facilities provide expertise and support in various state-of-the-art technologies and allow the implementation of highly sophisticated research projects.
Family-friendly offers and life in Freiburg
The Institute offers a parent-child and breastfeeding room, and a day care centre is affiliated with the institute. Freiburg is one of the most liveable cities in Germany, where Black Forest idyll meets cutting-edge science.
Your qualifications:
- MSc, MRes, Diploma or an equivalent degree in Biology, Biomedicine, Chemistry, Physics or related science, to be obtained by the start of the program in September 2026 at the latest
- Practical experience in the lab working on scientific projects
- Excellent English language skills and the desire to work in a dynamic, international team
