The RGC Junior Research Fellow Scheme (JRFS, formerly known as RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme) aims at providing promising local and non-local postdoctoral researchers at UGC-funded universities with support at a pivotal time in their very early career, as well as supporting their transition, as applicable, in taking up Assistant Professor (Asst P) or Research Assistant Professor (RAP) positions at UGC-funded universities during the fellowship period, so as to nurture and expand a pool of research talents with a view to propelling research and development in Hong Kong and fostering a research culture.

The Fellowship

  • supports each awardee with a full-time appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow (PdF) at the supporting university for a period of 24 months, with an optional extension to 36 months upon request, and
  • provides research support funding for the JRFS awardee at (i) above who have successfully completed their postdoctoral stage and have become Assistant Professor (Asst P, tenure-track or non-tenure track) or Research Assistant Professor (RAP) at the supporting university during the 24-month fellowship.

Terms and Benefits

a) HK$34,700 per month as the basic salary;
b) a top-up amount of HK$10,000 per month will be provided to the appointee in addition to the basic salary;
c) HK$13,600 per year for conference and research-related travel allowance;
d) fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointees.

Eligibility

Applicants should have obtained/ been conferred a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification on or after 1 January 2023 (i.e. not more than three years before 2026), or will complete the requirement of a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification by 31 August 2027.

Applicants must obtain a legal right to work and reside in Hong Kong during the fellowship period.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Candidates applying for this Fellowship will not be considered by RGC for the JC STEM Early Career Research Fellowship for Translation and Application in the same year.
